It was also interesting to observe how his clothes and manner of actions/behavior represented his character. It is ironic that Judas then goes on to talk about being “kinda mildly afraid of going to hell.” I liked the symbolism of that scene.Īnother curious witness was Sigmund Freud. Judas became very interested in Satan’s red shirt he liked it so much that convinced Satan to exchange their shirts. In the following scene, Satan conjures up a memory of his meeting with Judas (in a drunk, wasted state) at some bar.

Satan wearing a black suit with a bright red dress shirt underneath made him appear all the more powerful, devilishly ‘charming’, sly, and intimidating. His character also made me think about the power of appearance and the impression that it makes on the observer. It’s as if every motion was thought through to the very detail, which added to his appearance of grandeur. His way of moving and speaking was slow, mannered, grandiose, and imposing. In my opinion, his character required/showed the most obvious acting. She clarified that “in order to hear, one must be willing to hear,” and that “you have to be willing to participate in your own salvation.”Īnother interesting witness was Satan. It was funny because Mother Teresa was wearing giant headphones on her head as a hearing aid, but also serious because this analogy helped to see that Judas intentionally shut God out of his life. She explained that Judas succumbed to despair and that he threw his earphones away, so that he couldn’t hear God anymore. When the prosecutor approached her and wondered why someone would want to go to hell (by committing suicide), she asked him whether he knew what despair is. Besides some circumstantial humor, she made some very touching and thoughtful comments. Mother Teresa was called up as one of the witnesses at the trial, and I considered her speech to be one of the most interesting, funny, and insightful all at the same time. I was amazing that he was able to keep that still composure during the entire play, except for when he was doing the acting.

This gives the audience an idea that it’s unclear which way the trial will result: will God (and the jury) be merciful or will the severity of Judas’ sin overcome the mercy and pity? That’s quite an appropriate remark, considering that for the entirety of the play Judas sits motionless on a cart in back center stage. Monica was so saddened by Judas’ pitiful state that she called him a “catatonic statue of a former human being.” She makes a point that a synthesis of love and justice is what makes mercy and forgiveness in God’s eyes. Other characters also make occasional appearances in order to further complicate and/or explain the situation, for example St. Throughout the trial many witnesses are brought into the courtroom (both dead and alive) in order to testify and provide the basis for the jury’s decision. Peter and then God himself), the attorney Fabiana Aziza Cunningham finally convinced the Purgatory judge, Judge Littlefield, to take on Judas’ case and allow for the trial to occur. After some very serious convincing (getting a writ signed by St. She speaks out that no mother should ever have to bury her child, and that immediately gets the message across. Seeing the pain and tears on her face reflecting her inner torture and agony over her son’s face allows us to warm up to Judas somewhat, despite our knowledge of his betrayal of Jesus Christ.

The play begins with a monologue by and a spotlight on Judas’ mother. The story shows us the development of the purgatory trial of the apostle Judas Iscariot. I thought that it was a very useful technique. That spotlight temporarily transported the audience to a new location and time without the participants having to take the time to change all of the props. Whenever ‘aside stories’ needed to be told in order to better explain the circumstances and impressions, the lights would dim everywhere except for a spotlight in the center of the stage where the action took place. For the entire duration of the play the stage was set as a courtroom in Purgatory (‘Hope’). My roommate Sahar Kazmi is a member of the University Theatre Guild at UT and invited me to come out to their newest play The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, written by Steven Adly Guirgis and directed by Katy Poulter. Continuing on with my pursuit of theatrical performance this weekend, I went to see another play on Saturday.
